My Name is Henry
Hullo readers,
I expect this could be a little strange, reading what a Golden Hamster has to tell you?
There is always a first time for anything, and I guess this could be that time.
I belong to my friend George. He saved me from a horrible pet shop. I say it was horrible because of the smells from all of the other animals in their cages nearby. I was on my own, and I was very unhappy. Then I saw this young lad walking along with his keeper. He was looking at all the other animals, but I knew I wanted to belong to him, he looked very kind. So I decided to do lots of things to make him look at me and see how clever I was.
My exercise wheel is pretty good and makes a loud squeak as it turns, so I thought I would make it go very fast and make a lot of squeaking noises. It was going so very fast and making a very loud noise …then it suddenly came loose. Then me and the wheel fell with a clatter! I was quite stunned, but I looked up as my head was still spinning and I could see the boy looking very concerned, and I could tell he was definitely asking his keeper if he could have me as his pet.
I was then put into another little box with some food and carefully carried out of the shop. I was so glad to be leaving and I hoped the boy and I could have plenty of good and fun times together.
His keeper was called Mother. I heard the boy call his keeper that, whilst talking to him. It was then I heard the boy’s name being called George. I liked the sound of that name, it sounded like a nice kind name. He kept looking at me in the box and gently smoothing my brown furry back. I had quite recovered from my nasty accident, and I was looking forward to finding out where George was taking me.
We eventually arrived at the place where George belonged. I was taken higher up in George’s home and into a place where I think George usually stayed. He was talking to me in a nice gentle voice, and I was so pleased I could understand all he was saying.
“I am going to call you Henry” he said as he held me in his hand, “you look like a Henry”. I was quite puzzled as I had never heard that name before, and I wondered what a ‘Henry’ looked like.
He put me back into the box and said he would come back and see me later.
I was very tired, it was very exciting to be someone’s pet, and I hoped that George was a nice kind boy and would love looking after me. Those were my last thoughts as I fell into an exhausted sleep.
Sometime later I heard George come into the room, carrying a large box in his arms. I peeped over the side of my box and watched him taking out a large cage, it was much bigger than the one I had in the shop. It also had a wheel, and a kind of tunnel where I could run in and out of. There was a ladder, and a kind of little room filled with what looked like some bedding material. After placing the cage on his chest of drawers he took me out of the little box and placed me in my new home. I was thrilled and to show George how much I liked it I ran through the tunnel, in and out of the wheel, and then peered into the little room, it was all dark, but as I nosed in, it felt very warm and cosy. I was so happy; I just knew that George and I would have some wonderful times together.
I had had a nice rest, and I watched George getting into his bedding, which also looked warm and cosy. I decided I needed some more exercise so I got into my new wheel; it wasn’t noisy like the shop one, so I was pleased I would not disturb anyone. I could also see George had placed some food into a bowl, and I stopped and had a sniff. Oh it smelt really good and I filled my mouth with as much as I could carry and placed it into my bedding room, to have later when I felt hungry. As I am a Golden Hamster I can fill my mouth with a great deal of food and then store it to eat later if I became hungry. The water beside the bowl was nice and cold and I drank my fill.
It was quite a long after that George came to the door of my home and took me out. Being only young I sat in his hand quite comfortably, and again he smoothed my coat and told me he loved me.
“You are now coming with me to meet my friends” he told me. He placed me into his pocket which also had some more food in there, so I was not frightened, not with my George.
We left his place, and he walked along with me peeping out of his pocket to see where we were going. After a little while I heard somebody talking to George, I felt his hand taking me out of his pocket and holding me very gently he showed me to another boy. I was a bit nervous, I could smell something not quite nice, not as nice as George and it worried me. I was snatched out of George’s hand by a very dirty smelly hand and placed into another pocket that smelt even worse. I was then thrown about as I felt nasty boy running away, and keeping me in his smelly pocket. I knew then I was being taken away from George.
I was very, very upset, I had found a wonderful kind keeper, and now I was being taken away from him. Would I ever see George again? Please find me George.
