Lifetime, or the past till now
I've found the years slip easily by
until on breaching each decade
there comes again a time to pause
to take the stock of life's crusade.
At forty, came some idle thoughts.
At fifty, seriously pondered then;
till next, when real meaning grew.
Then overall came three score ten.
Now looking back from Eighty past
there's no advantage thus to muse;
there's more behind than lies ahead.
I'll live for “now” not what I'll loose.
In younger times, though out of step;
some joy and small success was mine
but dimmed by doubt and diffidence,
till living and managing could refine.
So now I am free and have the world
from all of which I chose my dreams.
Great music that uplifts the soul, and
words to frame my fancied themes.
Above all within this modern age
I share men's new discovered trails,
Cosmic and quantum laws undreamt.
I catch their truth behind lifting veils.
In contemplation I can find solace,
within this muddled world of woe;
by redemption in wondrous things
that earlier men could never know.
